英文法を勉強し直すことにしました。その３：いとこの友達のお姉さん

日本人は中学高校でかなりしっかりと文法を学ぶので、複数形の s や所有格の 's については基礎はしっかりしています。
けれども例外処理で躓いたり、ルールを忘れていたりすることもあるかと思いますので、一度おさらいしてみたいと思います。

まずは単数形名詞の所有格から
原則は 's をつけます。
girl → girl's
brother →　brother's
family →　family's

おそらく一瞬悩むだろうと思われるのが語尾が s で終わる単数形名詞
bus、class、boss
このような場合でも、's をつけます。
bus　→　bus's
class　→ class's
boss　→ boss's
Ｓが２つも３つも連続すると異様な感じがしますが、文法的にはこれが正しいのです。

一方で複数形名詞ですが、複数形ですので元々語尾は-sで終わっています。
なので、原則としては複数形名詞の所有格は '（アポストロフィー）のみを付け、sは省略されます。
（私自身、このルールをすっかり忘れていました。）
girls → girls'
brothers →　brothers'
families →　families'

familyは単数形だと語尾が-ｙ、複数形になると-iesに変化する例でもあるので、ここに挙げておきました。

複数形でも語尾が -s で終わらないものは、単数形所有格と同じように 's をつけます。
women　→　women's
children → children's
people →　people's

上記のルールは一般名詞のみならず、固有名詞にも適用できます。
California → California's
Grace　→　The Graces　→　The Graces'

それでは次に複合名詞を考えて見ましょう。このケースに関しては、学校で丁寧に教えてもらった記憶が私にはありませんでした。

例文：私はケンとメリーの友達に紹介してもらいました。
皆さんだったらこの文をどう英訳しますか？

もし、紹介してもらった友人がケンとメリーの共通の友人(一人）だった場合には、ケンとメリーが対等格（一括りにできる）で「ケンとメリーの」友人ということで、
I was introduced to Ken and Mary's friend.
になります。所有格の'sの付け方としては(Ken and Mary)'s というイメージになるわけです。

もし紹介してもらった友人がケンとメリーの共通の友人でかつ複数の友人であれば、
I was introduced to Ken and Mary's friends.
になるはずです。

けれども、紹介してもらった友人がケンとメリーの共通の友人ではなく、ケンの友人とメリーの友人だった場合には
I was introduced to Ken's and Mary's friends.
ということになります。

こうなるともっと突っ込みたくなって、ケンの友人は一人だったけれどメリーの友人が３人だった場合にはどうするか、
I was introduced to Ken's friend and three of Mary's friends.

いかがですか？　こうなってくると、たかが所有格、たかが複数形では済まされなくなってくると思いませんか？

それでは次のチャレンジです。
例文：私の友人の奥さんの妹はレストランのオーナーです。
これはどうですか？
My friend's wife's sister is a restaurant owner.　
ですか？
The sister of the wife of my friend is a restaurant owner.
でしょうか？

's の所有格が２つ続くというのは違和感がありますよね。
of を重ねるというのも、不自然であり、耳にした時は特にその三者の関係をすぐには理解できそうにありません。

この場合は　The sister of my friend's wife is a restaurant owner.　と書き直すとすっきりします。

４段も５段も追っていかなければならないような関係であれば、's と of と関係代名詞 who を駆使して説明することになるのでしょうね。

それでは復習を兼ねて以下の練習問題をやってみませんか？スペルチェッカーがＯＮになっていると、ヒントが見えてしまいますが、以下の例文の複数形と所有格の誤りを見つけて訂正してみてください。（出典：grammar.ccc.commnet.edu)

It was jammed and familys kept arriving in bunch's until some people ended up sitting on box's and benches . The waitresses went crazy keeping up with the order's , especially with kids ordering from the childrens' menu. When it came time to pay the bill, they couldn't find Agnes's purse, and she had collected all the money. They had a lot of laughes about washing all those dish's until Uncle Antony found his baby girl, Eutrusca, curled up under his chair, sound asleep, using Agneses' bag for a pillow. Eutrusca hadn't waited for her grandpas long after-dinner speech to put her to sleep.
